Airbus A220 faces order decline as production challenges persist
Airbus A220 orders have declined in 2024, with a projected net loss for the year, marking a first for the aircraft. Despite nearly 250 orders in 2022-2023, cancellations have impacted the order book, which now stands at 898 total orders and a backlog of 516. Production challenges have hindered Airbus's ability to meet its target of 14 A220s per month by 2026. Current production is below six per month, causing potential customers to hesitate on new orders. The company is also facing supply chain issues and labor disputes. Airbus aims to boost orders by targeting existing customers for additional purchases and expanding into North America and China. Opportunities also exist in Latin America and the Middle East, as well as converting aging A319 fleets to the A220.
