AI tool predicts heart attack recovery paths for tailored care
University of Surrey researchers found heart attack survivors follow three distinct health paths over five years, using an AI tool to predict outcomes and enable earlier tailored care. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, analyzed 12,701 UK Biobank patients. It found 63% developed cardiometabolic conditions, 23% suffered smoking-related declines with a 44% mortality rate, and 14% developed structural heart issues. Genetic analysis confirmed each group mapped to distinct molecular pathways. Lead author Dr. Anthony Onoja noted the AI tool effectively predicted high-risk trajectories, while senior author Professor Nophar Geifman said the patterns add detail beyond standard risk scores, highlighting where intervention could be needed.
