AI finds 2,300 genetic clues to bring back the dodo
An AI system has identified approximately 2,300 DNA regions potentially linked to the dodo's distinctive traits, such as its large beak and skull shape, marking a significant step in the extinct bird's de-extinction project. The findings were announced by Colossal Biosciences on October 14, 2026. The company's GenoMorph platform analyzed genetic data from chickens, quails, ducks, and pigeons, alongside skull measurements from over 70 bird species, to pinpoint candidate regions. These 653 beak-size and 1,698 beak-width targets require experimental validation, as they are computational predictions rather than confirmed genetic instructions. Colossal plans to introduce dodo traits into its closest living relative, the Nicobar pigeon, using edited primordial germ cells. The company has reconstructed 95% of the dodo genome and raised a pigeon colony in Texas, though challenges remain in verifying modifications and addressing behavioral and ecological adaptation questions.
