African leaders call for ceasefire in Democratic Republic of Congo at summit in Tanzania
Leaders from east and southern Africa have called for an immediate ceasefire in the Democratic Republic of Congo during a summit in Tanzania. They urged all parties, including the M23 rebels, to engage in peace talks within five days. The M23 rebels have gained significant territory, including Goma, raising concerns of a wider conflict. Recent UN reports indicate nearly 2,900 deaths and around 700,000 displaced since January due to the fighting. The summit emphasized political solutions and demanded the reopening of Goma airport for humanitarian aid. Rwandan President Paul Kagame attended but denied supporting the M23, while DR Congo's President participated via video link.
