Advocate demands better rail safety for Lac-Mégantic
A rail safety advocate is urging for improved safety measures in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, on the 12th anniversary of a devastating train derailment that killed 47 people. The advocate highlights concerns about longer, heavier trains traversing the town, coupled with the delayed construction of a promised bypass to reroute trains away from the town center. The bypass project, funded by federal and provincial governments, faces ongoing delays and local opposition. The 2013 disaster, caused by a runaway train, destroyed much of the downtown area and spilled millions of liters of crude oil. The rail company maintains the current tracks are safe, while the Transport Minister reaffirms commitment to the bypass.
