Wairoa, New Zealand, recovering from devastating Cyclone Gabrielle

Wairoa, New Zealand, is still recovering from Cyclone Gabrielle, which damaged one-third of its 1,500 homes and forced the closure of its only retirement home. The cyclone killed 11 people and caused about 1,600 homes across the country to become uninhabitable. Recovery costs are projected to reach $14.5bn, and the government has committed an additional $1.2bn for more resilient infrastructure. The cyclone caused a global record of about 850,000 landslides across the country.
