Summary: A study of 3,047 US counties with 315 million residents found air pollution is linked to stress and depression, increasing the risk of premature cardiovascular deaths in under-65s. Counties with high PM2.5 levels were 10% more likely to report poor mental health days. In counties with high pollution levels, poor mental health was associated with a three-fold increase in premature cardiovascular mortality. Public health strategies are needed urgently.
