Zoological Survey of India launches wildlife study in western protected forests
The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) has started a new study on wildlife in protected forest areas of western India, covering regions from Goa to Karnataka. This initiative, approved in April 2024, aims to create a comprehensive database for the forest department. Previously, ZSI focused mainly on big cats and well-known mammals. The current study will assess seven groups of animals, including small mammals, amphibians, birds, and insects. Initial findings include over 15 types of unique crabs and a new beetle species. The survey is underway in several national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, with plans to expand to additional areas. The study will last three years, with researchers collecting specimens and publishing their findings to aid conservation efforts.
