Zoological Survey of India launches study on small animal species in western India

The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) has started a study on small animal species in three wildlife sanctuaries in western India, including one in Maharashtra. The project will expand to three more sanctuaries. Previously, ZSI focused on larger animals in tiger reserves. This new study will include insects, amphibians, and microorganisms, highlighting their ecological importance. The survey began in January 2025 and will last three years, with seasonal visits to collect data. ZSI has also discovered over 15 types of unique "forest crabs" in Maharashtra.
