Zelenskyy expected in Budapest on 23 October as Ukraine and Hungary reset ties
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to visit Budapest on 23 October after receiving an invitation to mark the 70th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution, his deputy chief of staff confirmed, as the two countries pursue a diplomatic reset. The visit, not yet confirmed, follows a breakthrough where Ukraine adopted legislation on minority education rights, addressing a key dispute with Hungary. Zelenskyy and Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar will hold their first formal bilateral meeting in Brussels on Friday, with Kyiv expecting positive progress on EU accession. The diplomatic opening comes after Hungary dropped objections, allowing the EU to open two additional accession clusters, totaling four of six. Kyiv is open to hosting Magyar in Ukraine, while his presence at the commemoration could symbolically highlight Ukraine's defence against Russia's invasion.
