Zelensky warns of blackout after Russia hits 15 Ukrainian energy sites
Russia struck over 15 Ukrainian energy generation and transmission facilities in one of the largest attacks on the country's power grid, prompting President Volodymyr Zelensky to warn of a potential blackout threat. The most severe damage was reported in seven cities, including Lutsk, Rivne, Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia, Shepetivka, Slavuta, and Netishyn, with additional strikes on infrastructure in Kharkiv, Kyiv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. From 19:00 October 16 to 07:00 October 17, Russia launched over 320 Shahed drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, with repair crews working to restore power. Zelensky stated Russia aims to cause a massive blackout before winter, leaving millions without electricity and heating. He noted European partners have prepared new support packages but criticized the US for not applying sanctions pressure under the Graham law, saying weakened sanctions encourage continued attacks.
