Zelensky: Russia seeks NATO or US security treaty, talks only after war
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that Russia seeks a security treaty with NATO or the US and aims to change the security format in Europe, but discussions can only occur after the war ends. Zelensky stated Russia views security guarantees as a broader issue than Ukraine's commitment to refrain from retaliatory strikes. He emphasized that global security guarantees for Russia cannot be discussed until Ukraine's own security guarantees are clarified and the war's outcome is determined. The president noted Russia raised this issue before the full-scale invasion, including during a Putin-Biden meeting. He warned that any NATO withdrawal or security retreat would weaken the alliance, amid reports that Moscow may demand reducing NATO presence to 1997 levels.
