Zelensky reveals US proposal for Donbas demilitarized zone
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the US proposed creating a demilitarized zone in Donbas as part of its 28-point peace plan a year ago, but stressed that territorial issues can only be resolved by leaders of the warring nations. Zelensky said Ukraine was ready to discuss the demilitarized zone as a compromise, along with US proposals for "land swaps" and a demilitarized section of the Kinburn Spit under Ukrainian control. He noted the issue resurfaced during a diesel agreement signing with Russia but has not advanced. The Economist previously reported the US plan also includes a demilitarized zone in Donbas and would require Ukraine to formally renounce NATO membership. Zelensky reiterated that territorial questions remain a "red line" for Ukraine, to be discussed only at the leadership level.
