Zebrafish study suggests neck and back pain may stem from gene activity changes that harden the spine, pointing to potential new drug targets. Researchers studied zebrafish lacking a collagen IX gene, linked to early disc problems. Fish developed hardened, mineralized spines resembling human disc disease. The condition, intervertebral disc degeneration, currently has no drug treatment; surgery is the only long-term option. The team identified disruptions in fat metabolism, phosphate handling, and mTOR signaling. A bisphosphonate drug and dietary restriction reduced spinal damage, offering possible future treatment avenues.
