Zebra mussels found in New Brunswick's St. John River

Scientists gathered in Fredericton to discuss the discovery of a zebra mussel in the St. John River. This invasive species was found on a floating dock in December. Experts warn that if zebra mussels establish themselves, they could become nearly impossible to remove. The meeting included over 60 representatives from various agencies, including the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. They shared information on what is currently being done in New Brunswick to address this issue. Sarah Cusack from the New Brunswick Invasive Species Council emphasized the importance of awareness and response. Zebra mussels can reproduce quickly and severely disrupt ecosystems. They can damage beaches, clog water systems, and outcompete native species for nutrients. In Quebec, zebra mussel populations have grown rapidly in recent years, raising concerns about their impact. Research has shown that preventing zebra mussel introduction is cheaper than dealing with their consequences. In British Columbia, potential costs from zebra mussel colonization could reach over $64 million annually. To prevent their spread, B.C. has implemented strict regulations for boaters. In New Brunswick, efforts include the "Clean, Drain, Dry" campaign to promote safe boat transport. There are plans for boat wash stations, but there is currently no law to enforce these practices. Experts stress the importance of taking action to prevent further spread to other waterways in the province. Charles-Oneil Crites, a professor at the University of Moncton, has pointed out that millions of zebra mussel larvae could already be making their way into the St. John River. While zebra mussels will likely spread naturally within that river, preventing their movement to other rivers is still possible.
