You can now take a free selfie with Earth in the background, thanks to a new project launched by YouTuber Mark Rober. The project allows anyone to upload a photo to be displayed on a satellite screen and photographed against the Earth. Rober's company, CrunchLabs, invested $5 million in the "Space Selfie" project, which launched a satellite, nicknamed SAT GUS, on January 14, 2025. The satellite, equipped with a screen and camera, orbits 375 miles above Earth, capturing the selfies. Users can upload family-friendly selfies to the Space Selfie website, with the first images expected to be returned by mid-summer 2025. The project aims to engage the public with space technology in an interactive way.
