XDefiant began as a Splinter Cell game before its transformation

Ubisoft's XDefiant was originally developed as a new Splinter Cell game. The project transformed over time into the free-to-play shooter. The shift occurred as Ubisoft focused on games as a service. XDefiant was released last year to mixed reviews and shut down in June. Fans still await a new Splinter Cell, with the last title being Blacklist in 2013. A remake of the original game is rumored but unconfirmed.
