Wustrow Peninsula: East Germany's Decaying Restricted Zone

The former East German military restricted area on the Wustrow peninsula in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a complete settlement with barracks, villas, and a cinema, is decaying behind barbed wire. The site has been largely inaccessible and deteriorating for decades. The peninsula, connected to the mainland only by a narrow strip, was a military training ground from 1932, first for the Reichswehr and later as a Soviet garrison. After the last soldiers left in 1994, the area was sold to a private investor in 1998, leading to ongoing disputes over access and future use. Today, the area is a mix of ruins, a nature reserve, and a film location, used for productions like "Roter Himmel." It remains a contested site, with conflicting visions for its future as either a development project, a nature park, or a memorial.
