Worldwide internal displacement reached a record high in 2024

A new report reveals a record 83.4 million people were internally displaced worldwide by the end of 2024, the highest number ever recorded. This marks a significant increase, highlighting a growing global crisis. The Global Report on Internal Displacement 2025, released today, shows the figure has more than doubled since 2018. Conflict and violence were the primary drivers, accounting for nearly 90% of the displacements, with Sudan reporting the highest number for a single country. Disasters also caused a record number of displacements in 2024, with the US experiencing the most disaster-related movements. The report emphasizes the need for increased global solidarity and preventative action to address this escalating issue.
