Singapore and Japan have launched the world's deepest ocean art installation, created by artist Lakshmi Mohanbabu. It features three metal cubes placed 7,000 meters below the sea near the Mariana Trench. The project honors victims of natural disasters and promotes global efforts in disaster mitigation. Mohanbabu, an Indian-origin Singaporean artist, collaborated with NuStar Technology and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) on this significant project. Launched in December 2023, the installation was celebrated during an event in Singapore. The cubes are made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel and showcase Mohanbabu’s "Universal Language of Symbols." The art installation is integrated with seismic monitoring systems to help track earthquake and tsunami activity. Each cube measures 10 cm on each side. A high-tech camera system has been used to capture images of the cubes at their record-breaking depth. Mohanbabu emphasized the importance of art in connecting people and addressing shared challenges. She noted that this project reflects humanity's collective commitment to support those affected by natural disasters. This latest installation follows Mohanbabu's achievement in 2022 when she became the first Singaporean artist to send her work into space. She plans to send the interaction cubes to the Moon as part of a permanent installation. With these achievements, Singapore becomes the first nation to have artworks both in space and deep in the ocean.
