Wi-Fi 8 development focuses on reliability and user experience ahead of 2028 launch
Wi-Fi 8, also known as IEEE 802.11bn Ultra High Reliability, is under development with a focus on enhancing user experience rather than just speed. The final specifications are expected by September 2028, while Wi-Fi 7 has yet to be formally ratified. Wi-Fi 8 will maintain similar bandwidth capabilities as Wi-Fi 7, using the same frequency bands and modulation techniques. It aims to improve device coordination with access points, enhancing overall system throughput by up to 25% through new technologies like Coordinated Spatial Reuse and Dynamic Sub-Channel Operation. The development of Wi-Fi 8 is progressing despite delays in Wi-Fi 7's approval. Initial products for Wi-Fi 8 are anticipated in early 2028, reflecting a shift in focus from speed to a more reliable and efficient user experience.
