WHO reports record 8.2 million new tuberculosis cases in 2023
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported a record 8.2 million new tuberculosis (TB) cases worldwide in 2023, the highest since monitoring began in 1995. This marks an increase from 7.5 million cases in 2022. While TB-related deaths decreased from 1.32 million to 1.25 million, the total number of people estimated to have contracted the disease was around 10.8 million. The rise in cases is attributed to global population growth. Five countries—India, Indonesia, China, the Philippines, and Pakistan—account for over half of the global TB burden. The WHO noted that funding for TB prevention and care remains significantly below the required target.
