WhatsApp Launches Bill Payments in India via BBPS Network

WhatsApp launched a bill payments feature in India on Thursday, allowing users to pay household and utility bills directly within the messaging app. The service is supported by the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network. The feature provides access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories, including electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card, and loan repayments. It is rolling out gradually to all Android and iOS users over the coming weeks. Users can access the feature via an icon on the home screen, with options to view past payments, manage multiple accounts per provider, and use their preferred payment method. The launch builds on India's rapid digital payments growth, driven by UPI adoption and smartphone penetration.
