Waymo's driverless cars show promise for reducing crashes in new study

engadget.com

Waymo's driverless cars are now operating in more cities, and a recent study shows they may lead to fewer crashes. Conducted with Swiss Re, the study found Waymo vehicles had 88% fewer property damage claims and 92% fewer bodily injury claims compared to human drivers. The study also compared Waymo's performance against newer vehicles with advanced safety features, showing an 86% reduction in property damage claims and 90% in bodily injury claims. However, Waymo's operations are limited to urban areas, which may not reflect overall safety. Despite positive findings, Waymo has faced challenges, including a recent recall after a robotaxi hit a telephone pole. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating 24 incidents involving Waymo vehicles.
