Waymo study shows robotaxi platform outperforms human drivers in safety claims
A new study by Waymo and Swiss Re shows that Waymo's robotaxi platform is significantly safer than human drivers. The study analyzed hundreds of thousands of liability claims and found an 88% reduction in property damage claims and a 92% reduction in bodily injury claims for Waymo vehicles. Waymo's robotaxis were involved in only nine property damage claims and two bodily injury claims over 25.3 million miles driven. In contrast, human drivers would typically have 78 property damage and 26 bodily injury claims over the same distance. The study indicates that Waymo's safety performance surpasses even newer vehicles with advanced driver assistance systems. Waymo aims to address public concerns about safety as it continues to expand its robotaxi operations in the U.S.
