Walking helps, but rural Americans need strength training too

consoglobe.com (French)

A large US study found walking alone does not guarantee optimal physical fitness, as only 25% of walkers meet official health recommendations combining aerobic exercise and strength training. Published in PLOS One and led by Christiaan Abildso of West Virginia University, the study analyzed nearly 400,000 adults. Walking remains the top activity at 44%, yet almost 22% of walkers meet neither the 150-minute aerobic nor twice-weekly strength criteria. Researchers urge adding muscle strengthening to walking routines and tailoring health messages geographically, since rural residents show higher inactivity rates due to limited gyms, bike paths, and sports facilities.
