Violence escalates in Goma as M23 rebels gain control in DR Congo
Violence has escalated in Goma, DR Congo, as Rwandan-backed M23 rebels have taken control of parts of the city, including the airport. This marks the worst conflict in the region in over a decade, with over 100 people reported dead. Congolese security forces are struggling to respond, with more than 1,200 soldiers reportedly surrendering. Protests erupted in Kinshasa against foreign interference, leading to attacks on UN and foreign embassies. Rwandan President Paul Kagame and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the need for a ceasefire, but no commitment to withdraw from Goma was made. International calls for a ceasefire have increased amid concerns over Rwanda's actions in the region.
