Vinyl records surge in popularity as Gen Z embraces retro music culture

Vinyl records are experiencing a resurgence in popularity, especially among Gen Z. Sales of vinyl are expected to reach $1 billion this year, surpassing CDs and streaming growth rates. Vinyl sales increased by 15.4%, while streaming grew by 10.4%. Taylor Swift has significantly contributed to this trend, selling 700,000 vinyl copies of her album in just three days. Her albums accounted for 7% of all vinyl sales in 2023, totaling over 3.4 million records. This revival of vinyl aligns with Gen Z's interest in vintage technology, including cassette tapes and old cameras. Despite concerns about the environmental impact of physical records, the appeal of nostalgia drives this trend.
