Vienna's Tree Survival Strategy: Only 1.3% of Young Trees Die

Vienna's municipal department MA 42 reports that only 1.3 percent of young trees failed in 2025, citing effective measures against heat-related deaths. The city plants approximately 4,500 young trees annually to cool streets. Thousands of automatic irrigation systems and manual watering, at least weekly for four years and twice weekly during heatwaves, support tree survival. "Gieß-Bags" holding up to 75 liters, heat-resistant tree varieties, and the Schwammstadtprinzip for root space are also employed. The city attributes losses to delivery damage, vandalism, or storms, not just heat. As of late June 2026, the failure rate stands at 0.5 percent, with innovative "Smart Trees" sensors under evaluation for intelligent watering.
