VA tests semaglutide as alcohol use disorder treatment in 600 veterans

The Department of Veterans Affairs has launched a clinical trial testing whether semaglutide, a popular diabetes and weight-loss drug, can treat alcohol use disorder in 600 veterans across 18 VA hospitals. The CRAVE trial will give participants with moderate or severe alcohol use disorder weekly semaglutide injections or a placebo for six months. More than 400,000 veterans are diagnosed with the condition, and enrollment has begun. VA Secretary Doug Collins said the study aims to expand treatment options for veterans.
