Utah judge releases 1977 Hawaii murder suspect Gideon Castro
A Utah judge released 66-year-old Gideon Castro, a suspect in the 1977 murder of Hawaii teenager Dawn Momohara, after prosecutors in Honolulu stated they were not ready to proceed with charges. Castro was arrested in January at a nursing home and had waived extradition rights. Prosecutors cited complications with a key witness and the state of evidence as reasons for the delay. Honolulu police continue to investigate the case, which went cold for decades until DNA technology linked Castro to the crime. Authorities had previously released sketches of a person of interest but could not identify a suspect until recently.
