UT professors partner with NVIDIA to advance weather and air quality forecasting

University of Tennessee professors Joshua S. Fu and Jia Xing are collaborating with NVIDIA to integrate atmospheric composition into its Earth-2 AI platform, aiming to create a combined weather and air quality forecasting framework. The professors are using their atmospheric chemistry weather model to enhance Earth-2's current capabilities, which lack detailed representation of aerosols, dust, and smoke that affect weather extremes and climate. NVIDIA is providing eight GPU nodes and cloud computing for 16 months to support the research. The improved model offers hyper-local predictions, potentially benefiting sectors like agriculture and emergency preparedness. Fu and Xing hope the partnership leads to long-term collaboration and better forecasting performance for local communities.
