U.S. travel, federal access requires REAL ID in 2025

Starting May 7, 2025, a REAL ID or Enhanced driver's license will be required for domestic air travel and entry into federal buildings and military bases. Without one, access will be restricted. These IDs, including New York's Enhanced option, are also valid driver's licenses. REAL IDs have a star, while Enhanced IDs display "Enhanced" and an American flag. Both require in-person DMV visits with identity and residency documentation. While a REAL ID isn't needed for all activities, alternative IDs like passports can still be used for travel. The REAL ID Act, enacted in 2005, aims to enhance federal security measures.
