US transfers NATO command roles to Italy and Britain

kathimerini.gr (Greek)

The US is transferring command of two NATO operational headquarters to European allies. Italy will assume leadership of the Southern Wing headquarters in Naples, and Britain will take over the Northern Wing headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia. This shift aligns with calls for European nations to increase their security responsibilities. In exchange for relinquishing these commands, the US will gain control of NATO's unified maritime command, Marcom, based in Northwood, UK. These changes are expected to be implemented within months. The US will retain central command of all three military branches within NATO and its strategic Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) position.
