US sports collectibles leaders cite social media and athletes as growth drivers
Sports collectibles industry leaders report a booming hobby, citing record crowds, skyrocketing prices, and an influx of new, younger collectors at recent major conventions. The industry has gone mainstream. Interviews with nearly 20 executives from auction houses, grading services, and card manufacturers at Fanatics Fest and the National Sports Collectors Convention highlighted athlete engagement, social media visibility, and strong financial returns as key drivers attracting newcomers to trading cards and memorabilia. Sotheby's sports auctions generated $26 million, up 270 percent year over year, with nearly half the value from new buyers. Vintage cards of legends like Babe Ruth and Michael Jordan continue fueling price growth.
