US leads world in visits to sexually explicit deepfake websites, India ranks second

A recent survey shows the United States leads globally in visits to websites that create sexually explicit deepfake images, with 59.73 million visits. India and Japan follow with 24.57 million and 18.43 million visits, respectively. The survey identified 41 websites that allow users to generate these images using generative AI. More than half of these sites launched in 2024, reflecting a rise in deepfake content online. As concerns grow, experts are calling for stricter laws and better information literacy to address the issue. Countries are beginning to draft legislation to combat the misuse of deepfake technology.
