The U.S. gambling industry has seen record revenues for the fourth year in a row. In 2024, the industry made $71.92 billion, a 7.5% increase from $66.5 billion in 2023. This growth is highlighted by the highest quarterly revenue ever recorded in the fourth quarter, totaling $18.62 billion. The American Gaming Association (AGA) attributes this success to several factors. More states are legalizing gambling, which has drawn increased participation from people. Bill Miller, the AGA's president, emphasized their commitment to continue supporting growth in this sector. Online casinos and sports betting have contributed significantly to the revenue, amounting to about 30% of total gaming earnings. Online casinos generated around $8.4 billion, operated legally in seven states, all of which reported record revenues. Retail gambling, primarily in Las Vegas, accounted for $49.78 billion. While this was a small increase, 12 out of the 27 states with casinos set new revenue records. Other strong markets include New Jersey, Illinois, and Washington D.C. Sports betting has also become a major revenue source. It reached $13.71 billion last year, up more than 25% from $11.04 billion in 2023. The Super Bowl alone saw around $1.25 billion bet, and upcoming sporting events are expected to bring in even more. Taxes from gambling are also rising. In 2024, total gaming taxes reached $15.66 billion, an increase of 8.5% from the previous year. This growth not only benefits operators but also contributes to state and national revenue, creates jobs, and attracts investment. Looking ahead, the industry is likely to keep expanding, especially in online and sports betting. However, traditional casinos like those in Las Vegas remain popular and are expected to thrive alongside newer formats.
