US ends funding for global vaccine alliance Gavi
The United States is withdrawing its financial support from the global vaccine alliance Gavi, citing concerns that the organization has disregarded scientific evidence and lost public trust. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced the decision, criticizing Gavi's actions during the COVID-19 pandemic and its current vaccine recommendations. The U.S. has contributed $8 billion to Gavi since 2001, and the withdrawal comes as Gavi seeks to raise $9 billion for the next five years. Gavi, a public-private partnership, has vaccinated over a billion children, saving an estimated 18 million lives. The British government has pledged $1.7 billion to Gavi between 2026 and 2030.
