US agencies split on AI firm Anthropic's security status

The US government is sending conflicting signals about AI firm Anthropic, with the Commerce Department declaring the company in good standing while the Pentagon maintains it remains a supply chain risk. This split follows months of disputes over military use of Anthropic's AI systems. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said at the G20 Innovation Summit that Anthropic has "done what we asked" and is "back on the right side." However, Pentagon official Emil Michael countered on social media that Anthropic is "still a designated Supply Chain Risk," highlighting friction between federal agencies. A federal judge previously blocked the Pentagon's attempt to blacklist Anthropic as "illegal and baseless," though the company is appealing another penalty. The dispute stems from Anthropic's refusal to allow military use of its AI for surveillance or autonomous weapons.
