University of Greater Manchester sacks vice-chancellor George Holmes

The University of Greater Manchester has sacked Vice-Chancellor George Holmes, who was suspended in May 2025 over allegations of financial mismanagement and misconduct. His contract was ended by the governing body this week. An independent inquiry and a Greater Manchester Police probe followed allegations reported by The Mill; three people have been arrested over suspected fraud, bribery and money laundering. Police say evidence indicates over £1m of fraudulent activity, including 60 transactions and more than one million emails. Holmes, 65, had led the university for 20 years.
