UNICEF reports surge in sexual violence against children in eastern Congo
A UNICEF report reveals a surge in sexual violence against children in eastern Congo, with hundreds of cases reported recently. This marks a significant increase in such incidents, attributed to escalating conflict in the region. The report highlights that child soldiers are being recruited at unprecedented levels. The situation worsened following a prison break where female inmates were raped and killed, further intensifying the humanitarian crisis. In the week of January 27 to February 2, health facilities reported 572 rape cases, including 170 involving children. The UN Human Rights Council has initiated an investigation into these atrocities amid ongoing violence from various armed groups.
