UNESCO General Secretariat thwarts Algerian maneuver on caftan heritage designation

UNESCO's General Secretariat thwarted an Algerian attempt to alter the designation of the caftan during a heritage meeting. Algeria proposed an amendment to include "Wearing the Caftan" in a traditional garment's nomination, claiming lack of notification. The proposal was put to a vote, leading Algeria to withdraw its amendment. This move followed a diplomatic setback for Algeria and precedes Morocco's separate nomination for the caftan's inscription on the heritage list.
