Hickeys, or love bites, are bruises caused by suction and are usually harmless, fading within two weeks. Factors like alcohol, certain supplements, and exercise can worsen bruising or slow healing. Dermatologists suggest cold compresses, then heat, and topical treatments to aid fading. While typically minor, hickeys can rarely lead to infection, herpes transmission, or even stroke if aggressive suction occurs near the carotid artery.
