"Underdogs": Austrian show fights isolation through dance and acrobatics

aawsat.com (Arabic) —

The Austrian theatrical production "Underdogs" explores social isolation and an individual's place within their community through six performers who use acrobatics, dance, and movement instead of spoken language. The show was presented in Egypt as part of the Isis International Festival for Women's Theatre. The performance portrays belonging not as a ready-made solution but as a difficult process built through trust, contact, and conflict, where the group transforms individual fragility into shared energy. Director Edita Braun said the idea originated from her personal sense of helplessness regarding global political shifts, wars, repression, and climate change. Braun developed the work through improvisation with dancers she has collaborated with for over 40 years, rather than a written script. She noted that dance transcends cultural boundaries, and the Egyptian audience responded positively to the acrobatics and anti-war message. She is now adapting the production into a film and open-air performances.
