Uncle sentenced for long-term sexual abuse of niece
A 65-year-old man has been sentenced to an additional 21 months in prison for sexually abusing his niece over 30 years ago. The man, who is already serving time for other child sex offenses, pleaded guilty to multiple charges of sexual assault that occurred between 1992 and 1998 when the victim was just a child. The abuse happened in the girl's grandparents' home while the uncle was living there. The woman reported the incidents to the police in February 2023, recalling specific events of the abuse. She described the grooming behavior of her uncle at the time. During the court proceedings, the victim spoke about the lasting impact the abuse has had on her life. She shared how it has caused her difficulties in trusting others, as well as feelings of anger and depression. She also mentioned experiencing paranoia and having suicidal thoughts, which have affected her ability to work and care for her children. While the defense acknowledged that the man admitted to other offenses, they asked the court to consider his remorse. The judge recognized the severe breach of trust involved and emphasized the long-lasting trauma experienced by the victim. He stated that the man’s actions had considerably affected the woman's peace of mind, as she worries for the safety of her own children.
