UN report lists India among five countries with highest poverty rates
A UN report reveals that India is one of five countries with the highest number of people living in poverty, totaling 234 million. The report states that 1.1 billion people globally live in acute poverty, with over half being children. The other countries with significant poverty levels are Pakistan (93 million), Ethiopia (86 million), Nigeria (74 million), and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (66 million). Together, these nations account for nearly half of the world's poor. The report highlights that 455 million poor people live in conflict-affected areas, where poverty rates are significantly higher. It also notes that rural populations are more affected by poverty than urban populations, with 28% of rural residents living in poverty compared to 6.6% in urban areas.
