UN judge Lydia Mugambe convicted of slavery in UK
A British jury has convicted Lydia Mugambe, a United Nations judge from Uganda, of forcing a woman into slavery. She tricked the Ugandan woman into coming to the U.K. and made her work as a maid and childcare provider without pay. Mugambe, 49, was studying for a doctorate at Oxford when the offenses occurred. She faced four charges, including forcing someone to work and conspiracy to intimidate a witness. The jury found her guilty on all counts. Mugambe denied the charges but was convicted at Oxford Crown Court. She is scheduled to be sentenced on May 2.
