UN compiles list of 4,000 individuals linked to serious crimes in Syria since 2011
The United Nations has compiled a list of 4,000 individuals involved in serious crimes in Syria since the civil war began in 2011. This development follows the recent fall of President Bashar al-Assad, which has raised hopes for accountability among high-level perpetrators. The UN Commission of Inquiry on Syria has gathered evidence remotely, including over 11,000 testimonies from victims and witnesses. With Assad's departure, investigators aim to access Syria directly and preserve crucial evidence found in detention facilities. The commission has cooperated with 170 criminal investigations, resulting in 50 convictions for war crimes. Investigators emphasize the need for justice for victims and the importance of protecting evidence related to the crimes committed in Syria.
