UN chief warns of escalating violence in Sudan as outside forces intensify conflict
The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reported that Sudan's military and paramilitary forces are intensifying attacks, worsened by outside influences. He highlighted the dire humanitarian situation, with millions facing hunger and disease amid ongoing violence.
Guterres noted alarming incidents of mass killings and sexual violence in recent days, particularly in Gezira province. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has resulted in over 24,000 deaths and displaced more than 11 million people.
He called for an immediate ceasefire and accountability for those violating humanitarian law. The ongoing violence echoes past atrocities in Darfur, raising concerns about potential war crimes and crimes against humanity.
