ULB students sanctioned for AI-assisted exam cheating
Several students at ULB's Solvay Brussels School were sanctioned for suspected AI-assisted cheating on a June Python exam, with all their May and June exams annulled. Two repeat offenders, who appealed to the Council of State, were rejected and must retake all exams this year. The suspicion arose because students gave correct final answers without showing intermediate calculations, which faculty experts deem impossible to do entirely from memory. One student's claim of erasing work with Tipp-Ex was disproven by chemical analysis, which found no traces of calculations underneath. Dean Catherine Dehon emphasized the faculty's commitment to ethics, noting that connected glasses and earpieces make AI use easier in large auditoriums. She mentioned ongoing projects to combat cheating, though oral exams would require doubling funding, and signal jammers are not feasible due to safety concerns.
